Today the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced their endorsement of a revolutionary new technology, in the fight against tuberculosis (TB). Xpert MTB/RIF is a new TB diagnostic that decreases the time it takes to diagnose a person with TB from weeks or months to less than two hours. Xpert allows patients to rapidly receive a diagnosis and begin appropriate treatment, in ways that no other technology has allowed until now. Because treating TB means stopping its spread to others, used widely Xpert will prevent TB transmission on a massive scale, finally ushering us an era where eliminating TB is possible.
